To My Friends at UPB, Old and New…

UPB Entrance

Last night, I had an opportunity to return to my alma mater of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford to speak about blogging, social media, podcasting, and the birth of Breaking Brews and the Pittsburgh Craft Beer Network. While those were the focal points of the evening, getting the chance to discuss the route I took to get this business rolling and impart some knowledge about absorbing all experiences, positive and negative, as building blocks to eventual success was the highlight for me.

When I took the same Media Advertising class some 13 years ago on the same campus (well, kind of the same…the labs didn’t have iMacs when I was a proud Panther), I never could’ve predicted I’d be standing in front of that class and talking about how the world of advertising has changed almost completely. Internet advertising was still a very raw thing back in those days and Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, even blogging (just a few of the key components I utilize to operate my business) weren’t even glimmers in the inventors’ eyes. It was pretty cool to be part of an engaged discussion about all the changes and progress we’ve made over the years.

I’d like to extend a thank you to my friend and Alumni Director Lindsay Retchless for showing me the new UPB and treating me to dinner in the Commons. It was rad to get that rush of nostalgia as I walked back onto campus for the first time in a while and even better to see how far Pitt-Bradford has come since I parted ways with it in 2002. You guys have it GOOD! Looking forward to planning the alumni tailgate party with you, Lindsay. And don’t worry…the beer is handled. 🙂

I’d also like to thank Margie Brown for inviting me to hang out with her class. It was a great time and I am happy to make the trek up to Bradford to do that again any time.

Finally, I’d like to thank each and every person in the this year’s Media Advertising class for participating in the discussion and asking great questions throughout the whole night. I was concerned we wouldn’t have enough to talk about in the 2 hours, 15 minutes we were given. Thankfully, you guys rock and contributed some tremendous insight to the conversation. When that intern thing we discussed becomes reality, I won’t hesitate to reach out to you all again. If you ever have any questions about blogging, podcasting, social media, or beer, you know where to find me…get in touch!

Thanks again guys, and best of luck to all of you the rest of the semester!

Cheers,
