The Goods From Travis Brown

Top 3 Takeaways From This Value-Packed Conversation

  • You are a product of the people you spend the most time with. Put yourself in a position where you’re forced to level up because you’re surrounding yourself with people on a different level than you
  • Create content FOR YOUR AUDIENCE, not FOR YOURSELF
  • Shift your mindset and say “I GET to do this today” versus “I HAVE to do this today”

Show Notes

1:30 – A time that Travis listened to himself instead of what others told him was right and it led to a major accomplishment

2:57 – A journey down Travis’ entrepreneurial path. What has he encountered along the way and what major lessons did he learn that continue to drive him today?

6:55 – Revisiting how testing the market will save you a ton of time and stress
     – Before building something that YOU think is the most revolutionary product or service, find out if people actually want it
     – Don’t be afraid to ask people if they’ll buy it
     – When someone says no, they’re giving you a gift. Now you can take your energy and put it towards coming up with a new big idea
     – You’ll have lots of ideas, but if you don’t bounce those ideas off others, you’ll waste a ton of time and resources trying to create something that could potentially go nowhere

10:52 – As Travis has made transitions to podcast editor to podcast coach to creator coach, was there ever a point that he felt like he was making the wrong decision and should just stay the course?

13:56 – Putting emphasis on the fact that you need to level up and you are, indeed, a product of the people you spend the most time with
     – “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future” — Dan Pena
     – If you’re not reaching your goals and leveling up, it’s because you’re hanging out with the wrong people
     – Is your inner circle leveling you up or are they just friends I’ve had for a long time?
     – You can still have those friends, but your inner circle needs to be pushing you beyond where you are right now
     – WARNING: When you get into those situations, it’s going to feel awkward at first. But as you proceed, you’ll notice that you’re developing new skill sets, as well as confidence
     – “Get comfortable being uncomfortable.” — Travis

16:26 – What is Social Boom and what can content creators expect when they join the community?

19:48 – The shift in online learning from automation to community and involvement
     – It can be hard to keep that initial level of excitement up for completing a course when you don’t have someone holding you accountable
     – If someone doesn’t have access to support, they may throw in the towel because they feel they can’t reach the finish line alone. And, on top of that, they may be soured to making future investments in their growth and development because it feels like a waste of money
     – When you played little league as a kid, you had a coach to keep you on track. That coach didn’t hand you a PDF on how to hit a baseball. They ran drills and showed you how to do it
     – Don’t build a wall between your course, offer, etc. and yourself!
     – It pays to network because you never know who you may connect with and how they could help you in the future

26:58 – Don’t dismiss opportunities because someone or someTHING hasn’t broken through yet
     – If you’re looking for podcast guest opportunities, don’t disqualify a show because you feel it’s “too small.” It may be small now, but they could break through and be HUGE someday. AND…it could be YOUR MESSAGE that helps their show break through
     – EMPATHY! Support everyone because, even if someone is new and just getting their start, it doesn’t mean they can’t bring value into your world AND you were once in that same position
     – Do not base your decisions on vanity metrics. You’re going to cost yourself a lot of opportunities
     – Impact is ONE PERSON is affected by what you do. It’s not critical mass. If you can help one person learn something or gain a new perspective, you’ve done your job
     – A creator’s job is to impact one person and that number will compound over time

33:35 – When did Travis realize his time was best spent on one specific platform and how did shifting his focus to Instagram and Instagram only change the game?

40:15 – When zeroing in on one platform to create so you’re not dividing your time, not only does it help to choose the one you have the most fun being part of, it helps to know which platform your audience is spending the most time on
     – Perhaps you’re trying to reach a certain age group, but they aren’t as present on one platform as they are another. In this case, you’d need to make a concession for where you create your content
     – Be sure that you create content for your audience, not for yourself
     – Commit to helping X person do X! Make sure your content is dedicated to helping that person get the result they seek
     – Ask yourself what you’re doing, who you’re helping, and what kind of information you’ll be providing them tomorrow
     – Trying to get a piece of viral content won’t necessarily attract the type of person you want to do business with. Instead of focusing on creating something viral, focus on creating something value that DOES attract who you want to work with

43:52 – With Instagram putting heavy emphasis on videos and Reels, is photo content still relevant and, if it is, what’s the best way to use it?

49:45MINDSET SHIFT: Instead of saying, “I HAVE to do something today,” say “I GET to do something today.”
     – Sometimes we forget the opportunities we have in front of us
